Sport Compact Drag Racer Mag Feature

The long awaited issue #4 of Sport Compact Drag Racer Magazine hit the stands today and is feature packed.

In this issue is the shoot i did some 9 months ago for the magazine of the Oak Flats Muffler Men RX3 Coupe.

This car has been owned by a close friend of mine, Steve McGirr since 1984, yeah i was only 1 yo when he purchased it, now thats a looong time to own the same car.

In this time it has gone through many changes and different setups. Starting its competition life as a 12aPP competing in Hill climb events, then to a 13bPP. At this stage Steve ventured into the world of drag racing where the bug really bit hard. It was not long before the search for more power led him to another upgrade, this time to the big daddy, 20B. But not the norm turbo setup, being a big fan of high reving ported rotors, the housings again copped a custom PP and this setup also incorperated a custom IDA Throttlebody injection setup. This powerplant would propell the RX3 into the 10's with a PB of 10.9@124mph, revs peaking at an ear busting 11,300rpm...

Steve and the RX3 has since moved onto a turbo setup after a loong break from racing (his wife wanted a new kitchen...) Between the strut towers now sits a very stout 13BBP Turbo package, with a large Garrett turbo stuffing as much air into the engine the 42mm Garrett wastegate will allow it. Tuned by Wollongong's Motortech, with initial setup assistance from Microtech ECU and general rotor guru Jon Blanch, the engine now produces a stout 550rwhp at just 18psi. Now backed up by a full race spec Liberty clutchless 5 speed, the car has pushed a 9.3@145+mph in testing and looks to drop the et further into the 8's once Steve gets a handle on the new box.

Steve's next big meet in the RX3 will be the up-coming Compac Attak at Sydney Dragway in late March, so be sure to get down there and cheer him on.

Another feature of the mag is driver/team profiles. This issue saw the TCR Racing team driver Dib Taouil highlighted and a nice crew shot i took at last years FUCHS Nationals used as the main image.

Thats all for now, see u next time....
